our gates also work by remote and are also not working, i have changed the batteries in all the fobs, so it can't be this, we asked a neighbour to park his car on our drive as a test and after 2/3 mins, his remote also stopped working, could it be a mobile phone mast or police listening device, or similar?

Man! If that doesn't sound like a reason to start handing out tinfoil hats, I don't know what is!

Seriously though, this does sound bizarre. Did your neighbor's remote work for 2-3 minutes before it stopped working? If yes, does it return to working order when he leaves your drive?

A "listening device" is just that: a receiver. It couldn't interfere with an electromagnetic device.
If by "phone mast", you mean a transmitting antenna, then yes, there is a possibility that it could interfere with a radio fob, but it would have to be quite powerful and wideband which is unlikely.
Still, it begs an experiment. When your car is parked at a point where the fob doesn't work, get in your car and turn on the radio. If you are getting no reception, then the "plot will have thickened" as they say....

Just out of curiosity, where do you live? Your language has the flavor of England. Possibly Canadian, but I would guess England.

I have heard of a radar station causing this kind of problem before, a phone mast shouldn't cause such issues. Where are you from and do you live near an airport? The strange thing is that it only affects your driveway, something is flooding the area with radiowaves which are blocking the signals from your key fob. You mentioned that you have electric gates, do they use a sensor which automatically opens the gates as you leave? If so that would be my first point of call in an investigation.

Good luck and if you find out let us know.

It could that there is strong magnetic or electrical field in the surroundings interfering with the wavelength of your remote control!! Frequencies are not generally affected by external forces but wavelength is and communication is affected.

I have a device that can jam people's mobile phones and they can't hear anything when they are in the vicinity of that device. I use this device to stop idiots from disturbing me!!

My brother in law's doorbell remote messed with a Saab 95 he had on hire. The Saab remote operated the doorbell and the doorbell remote messed with the car.

These are probably RF remotes.
What makes you think that the problem is not with the Receiver? (is the receiver power on?)
If you go close enough, does the remote work?
RF interference could be a problem, but if you are close enough, it should work OK
