First line--can & IS. I see this every day. Perhaps an over the top analogy, just an example! When in a long, almost unmoving line of traffic & I see cars in the crossing intersection waiting to merge, I always wave one or two ahead. Without exception, EACH car behind me does the same as they approach the intersection. Would they if I had not? The ones in front of me didn't. Smile at a check out person at the store, (especially when they look like they've had a worrisome day), make a cheerful comment. The smile reflects back, it starts a chain reaction where everyone is smiling. An elderly man who has purchased frozen dinners, (lives alone?) makes a brief comment, I get engaged in chatting about his grandchildren, make him laugh, & he literally walks out with a "spring" in his step. Small examples, but they say a lot, you think? I found Mirza Tahir's answer quite unsettling. I interpreted Gandhi's quote as: "BE the change you WANT to see in the world." That says it all. & that's ALL it says. I "especially" liked the last two paragraphs from Gaz. I'm glad he starred this question, or I wouldn't have seen it.

Greetings with love
If Peace and Love could be contagious, then I would love this virus to spread around the whole world!
But this is not the fact.
Gandhi's non violence and love to fight evil did not had any effect on Hitler. He wrote a few letters to the latter and nothing happened. The Flemish Leftist novelist and literature professor Kristien Hemmerechts has commented ("Milosevic, Saddam, Gandhi en Hitler", De Morgen, 16-4-1999): "In other words, Gandhi was a naïve fool who tried in vain to sell his non-violence as a panacea to the Führer."
Gandhi's non violence is really Gandi (filth, dirty) because he perceived fighting as evil, even against the perhaps greatest evil of the human history. If love and peace are contagious but except for some people, then we must protect ourselves from unconditional love and peace. They will make us naive fools like Gandhi and Hitlers will grow everywhere and make the world a hell.
Note : The Gandhi non violence virus could not stopped the partition between muslims and hindus.

Well I think it depends on the individual. Some people are just cruel and are only loving themselves. So its hard for me to say yes it is contagious. If love was contagious, then everyone would love Allah like I love Allah. I do know that when I was a young girl, I use to watch Disney films like "The Little Mermaid", etc. that made me feel like I wanted to feel that way. It was an illusion, love feeling. Sometimes we think we love something, but in reality it`s just an illusion. To me love for Gods sake is the most fruitful (beneficial) love.

Lemme tell u wht my theory is..
Just like we r affected by communicable diseases when we are not careful, free, always out in the open uncaring, so is peace, war, and religion. If our minds r open, then first we tend to accept the change and then change towards it...
If we blindly say peace is contagious, then wouldnt the British left India as soon as the Dandi March? Do u kno tht story??! sorry got carried away!!

Peace and Love, consequences of Action.
War and Hate, consequences of Action.
The choice between these opposing views is determined by Wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to properly and correctly discern Truth and the ability to Act to ensure a Positive Outcome for All Parties as opposed to My Outcome regardless of Others.
Love and Peace is chosen to ensure the Former.
War and Hate is chosen to ensure the Latter.
Wisdom allows us to see past selfishness and Compassion allows us to include Others in our choices, using both Wisdom and Compassion, our Actions in our personal interactions moment by moment will have Positive Consequence for Others and with careful purposeful Mindfulness acting in conjunction with Wisdom, these Consequences will ensure a Positive Outcome.
The Positive Consequences felt will engender further Positive Consequences as these Consequences continue long after the initial Action. Can this continuous reverberation be considered contagion..?
You might ask..."What if the Others do not respond in kind..?"... My answer is that it is not the purpose of these Actions to elicit a response. The purpose is to provide Others with happiness, ignoring ourselves as opposed to providing ourselves with happiness ignoring Others.
A good question well posited..
Peace from a Buddhist...

In reality you might say all there is, is peace and love, it's sad but it seems amnesia is contagious. Or people suffering from a case of mistaken identity. ~ : )

Ever been in a room full of pot smokers? They're very peaceful and they love everybody.
They'll also eat you out of house and home.
