What's the best grill to use for an apartment balcony?

I am about to get a new apartment with a balcony and want to buy a grill. I have neighbors below me and have lots of things in mind. I love to grill chicken breast and healthy food. I am concerned about the safety issues (gas vs. coal), taste of food, price (would like to buy something nice for 2 people below $150), and cleanliness.

After checking your apartment's and city's guidelines about having a grill on a barbecue, I would personally get a charcoal grill. They generally take up less room and for my taste, they supply a far superior flavor, especially if you use good hardwood lump charcoal and smoking wood chips or chunks to add flavor.

Which type you can fit will depend on your balcony. Many brands, including Weber and Char-Broil make small portable charcoal grills like the Smokey Joe or Weber Q Series (the Q are gas grills). Also, the smaller size kettle grills like the Weber 18-1/2" One Touch Silver or Gold grills (available almost anywhere grills are sold) should fit on all but the smallest balcony and they are well built and very easy and functional.

If you are worried about cleanliness of a charcoal grill, don't worry. All you do is scoop out the ash after each use. Not a lot of mess. In particular, the Weber Gold series has an ash catcher which you simply slide out and dump in the trash.

If you are worried that charcoal takes longer to get going than gas, simply get a charcoal chimney. No need for lighter fluid and your charcoal will be ready in minutes.

All of these grills are generally very inexpensive and you can definitely find for under $150.

We have restrictions at our apartment that require us to be at least 10 feet away from the building while grilling. That's why we purchased a Weber Q. They make a smaller version which would be ideal for two people. I think it's called the Baby Q.

We start it on high for 10 minutes to get the cooking surface searing hot, then reduce it to medium and put the lid down for grilling (recommended for most things like steak, boneless chicken breasts, etc.) We use the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com to do our grilling calculations. The results have been outstanding.

Also, we can bring the entire grill into the kitchen for easy cleaning, which is great because the design of the grill uses the shell itself to vaporize the juices (which creates that great grilled flavor), so there's not mess.

It's better not to use a grill on an apartment balcony. Think of the fire hazard.

You can grill things on an electric grill in an apartment, however.

Better check with apartment manager. There may be laws for having an open fire not to mention that most balcony apartments won't allow even flower pots on the balconies. It's a liability thing.

Most apartment complexes ban grills on the balconies so I would suggest getting a little hibachi grill.....Perfect size for two people & you won't smell up the building with gas fumes.

Make sure you can have a grill, first. A lot of apartment buildings will not allow one. Some will only allow electric, not charcoal. If so, there are a lot of electric ones available, ones that look like an actual charcoal barbeque grill. If you have to go with electric, you can add flavorings to marinades like liquid smoke or hickory flavored sauces to imitate the smoky flavor of the charcoal. It's not the real thing, but sometimes we have to make do with what we have. Good luck shopping.

In my city it's illegal to grill on the balcony...fire hazard...Hibachi is the smallest grill if legal, otherwise try an indoor grill like GE or something else.
