Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God.
If conversion hurts your relationship with God then it would be a sin.
If conversion strengthens your relationship with God then it would not be a sin.
With love in Christ.

*Is Catholic*
It is the sin of apostasy. If a Catholic goes through a formal ceremony that removes them from the Catholic Church, they have excommunicated themselves and it becomes incredibly difficult for them to be saved if they do not repent.
vice versa
The Koran teaches that all converts are to be killed and are automatically under a death sentence. Sutra IV. 89: “They would have you disbelieve as they themselves have disbelieved, so that you may be all like alike. Do not befriend them until they have fled their homes for the cause of God. If they desert you seize them and put them to death wherever you find them. Look for neither friends nor helpers among them…”
PS. The Pope did not say Muslims are going to heaven. Vatican II teaches that Islam does not save, but that some Muslims MAY end up in heaven, if they are through no fault of their own do not know Christ or his Church, and have an implicit desire of entering the Church and accepting Christ at the moment of their death.

All Praise be to Allah
no, it's not a sin to convert to Islam from any religion. I converted to this beautiful religion of Islam 4 years ago and I am so happy I did. My life is so peaceful.

It is a Sin to know the Law covenant Jesus laid down and not follow it.
First Law) Love God with your whole heart.
Are you loving God after he had his son die for you by worshipping or giving thanks to a Egyptian Tri-God that people named Jesus? Is it loving to worship a Rock and ignore Jesus Sacrifice?
Second Law) Love your neighbor as yourself.
Are you a loving neighbor if you try to forcible convert someone at the end of a sword, like the crusades or Muhammad killing of the Jews?
It would appear neither group even knows what God wishes or commands.

Religion A
Religion B
A person converts from A to B. This is a sin in A, but a good thing to B. Therefore the sin cancels, and you essentially have the same amount of sin as you had before.

Do *I* think it's a sin? No. Does the Pope or other Catholics? Probably. You are free to believe whichever religion you wish, so do so and have no guilt for it.

You need to follow the denomination you feel most closely follows the word of God. Most denominations discourage people from leaving because they feel they believe the truth.
