Call the biggest library in the region and work your way up and down. For example, Dallas holds many, many city directories and phone books for Dallas and surrounding cities for decades back. State libraries and state historical societies may have holdings. Depending on attitude, both the city and the phone company may have some as well as colleges http://www.ci.morganton.nc.us/
You might also look at parallel sources including tax and ownership records and college libraries.
