if you want to do car stuff there is a program at UNC-Charlotte for automotive engineering (probably among other places... that university comes to mind because its only a couple hours away from me), I think it is technically called mechanical engineering with an automotive concentration.

Mechanical engineering is like most engineering fields of study. At the bachelor degree level you get a basic engineering background that will prepare for a hundred different kinds of jobs such as designing manufacturing processes, designing air conditioning systems, designing lawn mower carburetors, a very broad field indeed. Once you get your degree and work for a few years you will probably find what you really want to do, get an MS and go there.

The future for mechanical engineering is that most of the jobs will be opening in China and Japan. There's not much of a future for engineers in the States.

I watched a report on TV regarding engineering demand in future years. They said that most of engineers are indian, japannesse or chinnese because american do not want to get into it. Therefore, I think there will be a HUGE sortage of engineers in 10 years (when you will be out of school and with a MS or experience). You will get paid a lot of money and will have a lot of demand and jobs available.
