Does adding that more descriptive label add more injury to the insult?

I know this question sounds ignorant, but I'm serious, and I realize that I don't know the difference between autism and mental retardation, I just mean what I asked.

Why do you need to call them either?
Autism and mental retardation are very serious medical conditions and does not make them bad people or have bad hearts.
If someone is acting or behaving in a manner that is stupid there are other terms that can be used without bringing insult to innocent people.

Autism and mental retardation are quite different things, so one is not a more descriptive label of the other.

Having a child with Autism any of the name calling is insulting.

calling them autistic, is realistic! and is a medical term, so how can it be insulting? calling them stupid, or a retard would be insulting!
retarded in an of itself is not an insult, retardation is also a medical term. I think we focus too much on words these days. You should be asking if we live in a caring world. If you are not saying these words, to be hurtful, then I see no problem with them. If you are using them to convey a persons challenges.

As a Special Needs Teacher, I find your question to be ill informed and rude. Autism is a condition that affects many children and adults around the world. Many are savants. Lots of famous individuals have autistic behaviors. One is the Richest man you've ever heard of. His name is Bill Gates. He is certainly a genius.

1 in 150 kids have ASD and it's getting worse.

Autism Spectrum Disorder - (ASD) Hereditary

Child has developmental problems,
Impaired communication and social interaction skills
Repetitive behaviors - shaking head back and forth, etc.

In most cases these symptoms are not identified until age 4
After which the child matures into more symptoms,

Seizures - (some seizures can cause brain damage)
Chronic Allergies - (foods, pollen, etc.)
High IQ / Low IQ
Unintentional Behavior Problems

I would rather be autistic than retard. Autism implies a special kind of mental problem, which is often not as detrimental as some people would believe. It is more often the suffer from a complete lack of empathy.

Being retarded suggests that I would not be able to think as lucidly or intelligently as I do now, which for me would be a horrendous place to be. Of course if I actually were retarded, I wouldn't be able to think like that.

Not really, both have a medical criteria to meet before being diag. as austistic or retarded. In either case, you're calling someone something they are not so I feel that in itself is the cause of insult, not because of which word is more descriptive.

Autistic people know what going on around them even if some are non verbal. They know what both mean, and what would you prefer, if it's one and the same, a human or a snake, shark, leech....?
