We are thinking of cruising out of NYC/Cape Liberty first week in September 2007. We've never cruised before, it'll be our 25 th anniversary and are on a strict budget due to college costs. Are we nuts?

No, I presume you are planning to cruise to Bermuda from there. Its a crap shoot as to whether a hurricane will stir up during that time. We did a cruise out of NY in September several years ago and it was actually Sept 12th. The weather for us was beautiful all the way to Bermuda and back. However, the staff told us that the preceding week there were storms left over from a hurricane and the ship rocked and rolled.

You may want to consider getting travel insurance, and with someone other than the cruise line, just in case you have to cancel because of the hurricane. I have used Travelex (www.travelex.com) a couple times for insurance for cruises and they are good, offer better prices than the cruise line and cover more.

The alternative that you may want to consider is a cruises to New England and Canada leaving out of Boston. Consider this: Take the train from NY to Boston (Amtrak fares will be low for seniors (pardon me if you are not senior but you said you have been married for 25 yrs) and they also offer AAA and AARP discounts). We did a New England Canada cruise last October on the Royal Caribbean ship, Jewel of The Seas. The ship, service and port stop were great. We stopped at Martha's Vinyard, Portland, Me, Bar Harbor, Me, St John's Newfinland; and Nova Scotia. The weather was cool in Canada but sunny and no threat of hurricanes. You can probably get round trip Amtrak tickets for the cost of travel insurance and skip the insurance.

If you want/need more info about cruises, just let me know.

not nuts, do need event insurance, if it has to be you could have booked better cruises, like doing the inland passages from seattle to anchorage and back for the same price, no storms would be present. in the atlantic, bring lots of dramamine and pepcid, you`ll need it if the seas do kick up.
