My doggy will be seven years old in June and my mom just recently noticed a lump about an inch and a half in diameter on his right side by his leg. He's a beagle and is suprisingly big. He has a strangly big rib cage I don't know if that makes a difference. Any ideas on what this could be? We plan on taking him to the vet later this week.

Here's the list of all the things I can think of that a lump could be:

+ an insect bite
+ a reaction to a foreign object
+ a lipoma (bening fatty lump)
+ a cyst
+ a carcinoma/sarcoma (malignant lump)
+ any other type of cancerous or benign growth

Probably a vet could think of more options!

Good luck, hope it's simple to fix, you're doing the right thing by getting it checked by a vet

It could be something as simple as a fatty lump, a lipoma. That means it is just a mass of fat. It could also be a reaction to a vaccine given a while ago. Of course, it is a good thing to check out all lumps because there are worse things it could be, but your vet can aspirate it and look under the microscope at the contents or even send it to a lab. You are doing the right thing by taking him to the vet. I'll be thinking about him and you. Good luck♥♥

Probably a cyst this is the most common thing. But it also could be a tumor. When you take him to the vet this week they'll let you know. My dogs have a few of those along with a few things called skin tabs. It's a common thing nothing to worry about unless the lump gets bigger over time.

My 11 yr old dog has a big lump on his chest. It doesn't seem to hurt him, and it's not inflamed or anything. The vet said fatty deposits under the skin are common in older dogs. It could also be a tumor or something else, though, so make sure you get it looked at by the vet!

My dog who is ten now had a lump at the age of 7also. we was really worried thinking the worst ,it was just a fatty lump quite common in older dogs even though he is only 7 years old it was left, and never has caused him a problem but the he got another one earlier this year that had grown really big he had it removed only because it was getting in the way of him walking , that to was just a fatty lump so it might not be anything to worry about but please take him to the vet to have it checked. good luck.

my dog is 9 years old and she got a lump aswell a few years ago. but it turned out to be a fat deposit..lol..she was fat, but she is skinnier now. the lump is still there, but it seems the more i make her go on a walk the smaller its getting. so if your beagle is a little chubby it could be a fat deposit.

Hopefully notheing more than a fatty tumor but alway a possiblity it is a cancerous tumour that is also growing inside the ribcage, so it is important that it is checked out

Good thing, taking him to the vet, he'll be able to diagnose the problem, x-rays might be needed, could be just a cyst, think positive, Good luck.

It's quite a common thing with older dogs. Does it look like a bad boil? You should still take him to the vet, but don't worry yourself sick.

Could be a number of this, only the vet will be able to tell you what it is, for sure.
