I was diagnosed with scoliosis late March, and I have a thing for signing (and fashion design, but we're not talking about that). I know some people sing through their chests, ect. , and as crazy as it seems, would scoliosis affect your singing?
Sorry if this seems stupid, I've been wondering.

You're in luck because I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 12. I had corrective surgery (spinal fusion with instrumentation) and am now 25 and a singer. Scoliosis for starters is an abnormal curvature of the spine. (Check WebMD.com for more information on the condition and treatment options) It in no way will affect your singing abilities. The only thing that has changed since I had the surgery (which not everyone has to have) is that I can't arch my back or bend my head down to my chest.

So to answer your question, no it shouldn't affect your singing at all. And no your question isn't stupid.

Ok..more of a clinical answer here..

The short answer is yes it could...but it probably won't be a limiting factor for you...

When you have lower thoracic or thoracolumbar curve, it tends to effect diaphragm which happens to be one of the major singing muscle as powerful voices come from being able to control this muscle effectively. People with scoliosis tends to have tight diaphragm...

However, as I said, it isn't a limiting factor because you can learn to relax those muscles and overcome difficulty...so it's not something that'll stop you from singin career. You just have to learn the right technique. I'm no singer so I wouldn't know where to start with that technique lol...

There are some nonsurgical therapies with good studies reflecting successful outcome like Spinecor. You might want to check it out.... http://www.myscoliosis.net

NO keep singing and promise me if you make it into fashion design you will design clothing for people with scoliosis. Nothing hangs right, either puckers up, or is lopsided.
