Animals are smarter than humans. In fact, it was probably the dogs idea to ride back there. If he didn't like the ride, he would have jumped out a long time ago. Seeing a dog looking out a window, or riding in the back of a truck, makes people smile. Don't try to take that away from us too.

I was sure I was going to find a large number of places where it was illegal to put your dog in the back of a pickup. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
From what I gathered, "...The Humane Society of the United States reports that only seven states have laws that prohibit dog owners from allowing their pets or working dogs to roam freely in the back of moving pickups".
I think it would be better if we could just enact a law that prevented stupid people from even getting near animals.
For some of those people that may be reading this - From the Utah Humane Assn: " It has been estimated that at least 100,000 dogs die each year when tossed from pickup trucks." This doesn't take into account the number of animals seriously injured.
It would appear that Man's best friend, does not necessarily get reciprocal benefits from this friendship.
Again from the Utah Humane Assn: "Man’s best friend is more than willing to give his life to protect his master, yet far too many people won’t take one simple step to protect possibly the best friend they’ll ever have...”

If a person has to put their dog in the back of a truck then they should have it tied to something so it can not jump out.

People train there dogs to ride in the bed of the trucks, they dont jump out or fall out, I live in Indiana in the country and see this to often. Yeah it could be dangerous but so could little fe-fe hanging out the window. We could turn to fast and she could fall right out. I dont think we need anymore stupid laws, our police officers have enough to worry about.. And I am sure if they felt the dog was in any danger they would stop the person driving.. As for the wind being bad on there ears above me.. I have never heard that one, and my dog lives to ride with her head hanging out the window.. Good luck on this law tho, some states already have it.

If my dog was stupid enough to jump out the back of my truck, it would be too stupid to do me any good if it was alive.

As many times as I've seen dogs riding in the beds of pickup trucks, I have NEVER seen one jump out or fall out yet. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but I've never see it, or heard of it. And I see people riding in the beds of pickup trucks all the time, too.....usually lawn service trucks. But isn't that just as dangerous?

Yeah, I don't get these animal "lovers." I am not a big animal person. I have no pets and never did, mostly because of allergies. Yet even I get angry when I see a dog like that or one that's left in the car when it's very cold or very hot with a window cracked so the dog can't get out. Or even when I see a dog with it's head out the window of car. Anything could fly into the dog's eyes or head and injure it. What's the deal with these people?! I know enough not to treat them like that and I am not even an avowed animal "lover." These people claim to be and yet they put the dogs in dangerous situations.

In CA it is against the law for a dog owner to put their animal unsecured in the back of a pickup or other truck for just that reason.

You don't know much about dogs, do you?
Owners train their dogs--the dog isn't going to jump out and knows how to keep from sliding out when the truck accelerates. There's no danger to the dog.
BTW--its called the bed of the truck. And the next time, find out the facts before you sound off.
