Well, an architect usually designs buildings, and I think what you mean by the other is someone who designs bridges and other structures, where the emphasis is is on function rather than asthetics. So it's a question as to which is more appealing to you.
Personally, some people like the Sydney Opera House, but I just think it must have been a ***** to engineer. I think that the Golden Gate Bridge is beautiful, even though there was no effort to make it beautiful, just to have it do a good job.
If you want people to praise you, you are better off becoming an architect. People have heard of Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry, but have you ever heard of Othmar Ammann, who designed just about every major bridge in the New York metro area, including the George Washington, Throgs Neck, Triborough, Verrazano-Narrows, and Whitestone?
On the other hand, no one questions Ammann's sanity, while many people have said Wright was a narcisscist (he designed structures to fit him, and he was somewhat short for a man, so tall people had a problem moving around in his houses), and Gehry is egotistical (his structures do not fit organically into their surroundings), self-derivative (everything he does looks exactly alike), and, in my own opinion, a moron. Do you want to be admired and criticized, or just know that your work is doing its job?
