Essentially, after over a thousand years of the Catholic church running the show, some Christians thought that they had gone too far from the actual teachings of the Bible and wanted to put it back in the hands of the people, and away from priests.

A misguided attempt to reform pagan Catholicism. They should've left Rome outright.Today,we have myriad denominations in Protestantism that are really daughter harlots of Rome.True Christians are only a remnant in these Last Days, and belong to no organized "church".

Luther was not the first to protest, but he was riding a wave of events and graft in the Church of Peter. Paul had earlier tried to take over the Church, but only achieved a bunch of quotes still used. Many in this present age seek to form Christianity in their image---and to their advantage.
If you want the Truth.....Ask a Pagan

Conflict over who had the authority to read and teach their interpretation of the bible, Wycliffe, Luther, Tyndale, King Henry VIII, Queen Mary, Queen Elisabeth, and King James,
The sole authority over the bible is God's. The sole teacher is the Holy Ghost, As individuals we are each to read the Gospel of Jesus Christ, ourselves. Our understanding is the sole responsibility of the Spirit of Truth, and can only come to us, if our faith to believe in the Words, results in our doing all that Jesus commanded, regardless of what we thougt we knew and believed to be true. This is what it means to be born again. Let no man deceive you, our teach you for you have but one teacher.

When Luther rebelled from the teachings of the Catholic Church and started his own Church.
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.." 2 Thess. 2:3

It was when Roman Catholicism found that they had to change. Oh, they did not stop the torture and killing, but they did find it difficult to quell the real Christianity about that time, really it was impossible. They had to reconsider their laws against owning Bibles for one.
They would torture people for having Bibles!
