I have a 3 year old son. He has been potty-trained for about six months, but recently has been having many accidents (instead of going into the bathroom to use the potty he pees on th floor in the playroom). He is a smart boy, but I can't quite tell if he knows he has to pee and just doesn't want to go to the potty or if it REALLY is an accident. He does tell me if he has pain or hurts from falling or getting hit by something (such as if he is walking and not paying attention and runs into a door, ect.), but he has not said anything about having disconfort while peeing. If there was disconfort than it would lead me to think that there may be an infection that needs medical attention. What other signs should I look for to determine if there might be a medical reason for these accidents?
Do you have any advice on how I can help my son get over this obstacle if he is doing this behavior on purpose?

I forgot to specify that he will go into his playroom to pee instead of going into the bathroom. The layout of our apartment is that from the livingroom (where most of our home time is spent) you walk down a short hallway to the bathroom on the right and his bedroom on the left (the "playroom" is the walk-in closet for the master bedroom-his bedroom).

I think that maybe he probably has started to associate the bathroom with something bad. Which has led him to pee in the playroom where he feels much more comfortable. Have you tried to put the potty chair in the playroom?? Maybe he'll use it there. But as for an infection...I really don't think so. I took my son to the doctor cuz he complained that his penis hurt. And he didn't want to pee. It turned out that he was trying to pee while he was erect which can be painful. But it's hard for boys to get a urinary tract infection. So I don't think it is that. But I think you should try moving the potty just to see if he'll go in the playroom instead of in the bathroom. Good luck

congrats on potty training. I wouldn't worry or make a too big of an issue with him about it. Also try not to punish him for it but tell him that it takes a lot of time to clean him up, time that can be spent with mom instead. All kids eventually go through this and will regress their potty training. You may just want to give him reminders maybe 30-45 minutes so he can have a "try time". Tell him he doesn't have to pee but at least try and they mostly likely will. Remember his bladder is not as strong as adults so accidents do happen and eventually he'll get in the flow of things and rush to the bathroom when he needs to go on his own.

It took me almost a year before my son started going in the potty every time. I came to realize he was afraid of the sound the potty, and wanted privacy when going. We just moved his potty chair out into the hallway outside the bathroom, and over a few weeks, inched it back into the bathroom. In the meantime, we also found that if he was really playing hard, he didn't seem to have enough time to get to the potty, so most of the time, we just (please don't judge me) let him play and pee outside. Eventually he got the hang of it. I hope this helps.

Yes, he could be doing this on purpose. He could be testing you to see what he can get away with. Once in a while would be an accident. Several times in a row and I think he's testing you. Sometimes, you do have to punish them for not telling you that they have to go. The first day and a half of potty training my son was brutal. He'd have an "accident" at every turn because he did not want to use the toilet. Finally, we wouldn't let him use the computer. Then we resorted to no computer and no watching TV, and, finally, we told him he'd have to sit on the floor (his "naughty spot") if he didn't tell us when he had to go. He only sat on the floor once, and that was enough.

There could be something going on... quite frankly, your son potty trained very young compared to some kids I am aware of. Boys can take up to 4 1/2 to be potty trained (in our Los Angeles area).

However, 3 is also a common age to act out in different ways to see what gets to you. I'd talk to my pediatrician and see if s/he has any suggestions -- it doesn't sound as though there is any medical reason for it -- but perhaps he's regressing to get your attention.

Also, I would suggest not letting it get to you too much. If he IS trying to get attention, you don't want to give him what he wants. If its medical, you don't want to make a huge deal about it & make him worry.

Either way - I would definately speak to your pediatrician...

Good luck -

I doubt that he's doing it on purpose, he's probably just getting so caught up in playing that he doesn't want to leave it for even a minute to use the bathroom. Just try to work a "time out for potty" in every hour or so.

if hes ever had a problem with missing the potty...make it fun put a fruit loop or cheerio in the potty and tell him to aim for the cereal he will have fun doing this and he would be more likely to want to go to the REAL potty.....well idk
