Do not give that which is holy to the dogs, neither throw your pearls before the swine, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you (Matthew 7:6)

Why were these two animals selected to symbolize something so negative ?

pearls are worthless rocks that only have worth because humanity likes looking at shiny things.

We're not that "high up" like those arrogant enough to believe we are the chosen species want to think.

The pig has the cloven feet that God instructed weren't to be eaten, so it is considered an unclean animal by His instructions. A dog produces nothing of value, when it comes to milk, fur or meat (although some people do eat dog) so to people who depended on useful animals, it didn't qualify. Also, if you go with common legend, dogs and pigs are filthy animals.

The bible randomly and negatively portrays a bunch of innocent creatures... just because back when it was written man was ignorant. Snakes, wolves, dogs, etc etc its all a bunch of crap... back in the day people didnt know squat, every animal symbolized something, based on what people thought of that animal. I shudder to think of how many animals suffered because of their portrayal in the bible... wolves being the worst victim.

People's interpretation of the bible, I suppose. Pigs and dogs were considered inedible because they were forbidden - they didn't have the cloven hooves as required by the law. neither did horses.
Also, pigs and dogs are notorious for eating quite disgusting things.

If you feed a pig garbage, he'll love ya.

If you feed a dog good food, he will worship you.

If you feed a cat good food, he will expect you to worship him.
