I'm Spiritual...not of any church, relition, temple and respecting of all beliefs and paths that any person is on.
I recently read of the above quote and wondering your thought.
I'm thinking that the person is speaking of the sleep / dream state. What are our dreams about? The messages and connection in that sleep state ?
Quote is of Edward Young...1683 - 1765

" Galaxy " . . . Appreciate your insight into the personality of Edward Young. . . Yet, my question still stands. I was seeking opinions on the quote itself...not the person making the quote.

I have said before on another question that our dreams are messages from our spirits, they may be cryptic, but if yo ulisten to them they will tell you more things about yourself and others that you could imagine.
I don't follow a religion. I'd prefer to go along the spiritual route if I did, but I'm not going to follow any form of a religion, as I belive is the same for you. You have a belief of your own, you do not beling to any churches, you respect all religions and therefore feel comfotable with your own belife, which is lovely.
As for the quote.....well all I can say is that I don't think thta there is a "god" as such. I don;t think he's a "he".......however I do belive that there is a force that is far greater than any human can ever comprehend, and that that is the driving force.
I belivee that everyone is their own God.....i.e. if you are brave enough to go ahead & do what you want when you want, then you have the power to let your light shine through.
I don't think I really answered the question, but I hoped it gave you some sort of insight.

A more famous quote is "there are no atheists in foxholes." And I think it is, like the Edward Young quote, a rather brilliant insight on human nature.
Regardless of anything our intellect and hard-learned cynicism my tell us on sunny afternoons, we cannot help but reach out to something larger, something magical when the plane hits bad turbulence.
This fact, however, does not excuse the right-wing religious--of whatever faith they may be--because these people behave like they're always in the deepest dark of night, in the battlefield foxhole and in the crashing plane. That's no way to live.
And life is the only gift any "god" gives us.

My thought on that quote; romanticized bunk.
"What are our dreams about" can't be answered conclusively, as we really just don't know. Modern theories include;
1. Dreams are the brain's way of reorganizing thoughts of the day.
2. Dreams are images/thoughts (sometimes--but not often--of wish fulfillment,) from our unconsious.
I've been working with dreams for almost 10 years now & have to say that they have been a good tool in learning more about who I am deep inside (the part that even I am not fully aware of.)

The guy was obviously a christian. As far dreams 'meaning' something I think that is silly. Dreams are merely your subconscious mind being allowed to roam so to speak. Your dreams have no deep meaning, no secret messages, no glimpse into the future.

Dreams are probably nothing more than the brain trying to clear some unnecessary memories out. This is the usual view of psychologists.

An atheist can never believe in God to any degree until there's solid scientific evidence of one.

Sombody, it might have been Froid, said that dreams are usually one of three things. Things that we desire, things that have already happened, or things that are complete gibberish. Genreally speaking dreams are usually about things that you are thinking about alot. For example, when my mom was young she had a business meeting she was concerned about. For a week she had a dream she was sitting on a chair and kept falling off, onto her face. It took her all week to realize her dream was reflecting her worries, as in "To fall flat on your face" or "To screw up".
