An exercise we used to do in the army - it sounds dead easy, until you try it..
Lay flat on your back with your hands by your side, palms down. Feet together and legs straight.
Keeping your legs straight raise them SLOWLY until your feet are just 6 inches above the floor. Hold for a count of 15 then SLOWLY lower them again. Repeat this 5 times.
Raise your legs as before, count 5, then SLOWLY open your legs (not too wide, just as far as if you were standing "at ease") but keep your legs straight and your feet just 6 inches above the floor - Hold for a count of 5. SLOWLY close your legs again. Hold for another count of 5. Then SLOWLY lower. Repeat this 5 times.
If you're doing this right you will feel the muscles in your abdomen working (if not actually screaming for mercy lol).
The only tip I can give you is, as you raise your legs try pushing down into the floor with your hands.

Sit ups, along with leg raises, primarily work the hip flexors. The abdominals are used to stabilize the back as the hip flexors struggle to lift the torso off the floor. There are better ways to work the core. Try crunches, planks of all kinds, and use external weight once crunches become too easy.

they work , but you have to be clear what you intend by doing situp , You have to go for proper diet control ie cut on Junk Foods , tea cofee, cola , Plus go for holistic exercise. Mean work out for entire body not just sit up . Some amount of Cardio + little bit of weight lifting , and breathing exercise Like Yoga. Even Yoga - Pranayam help a lot in reducing fat , increasing energy level .

sit ups will tone a stomach
however if there is fat on your stomach they wont remove that so if your trying to remove a bit of flab a good cardio workout is best followed by a few sit ups to help give your stomach definition

sit-ups do NOT work.. they are bad for your back and will eventually cause problems later!... if you wanna work your tummy, do crunches (feet on floor, knees up, and feet all teh way up) that will work the muscles tho it wont burn the fat...
believe itor not, walking is the best exercise... tho you gotta walk alot, jogging helps too... in moderation, unlesss you can do a whole mile jogging... also climing stairs alot will help tremendously with that lil pooch!!!!! its hard work but you gotta start somewhere!!!!

crunches - make leaner muscles
sit ups - build bigger muscles.
if you are trieing to get rid off belly fat - none is gona work since there is gona be more muscle underneath the layer of fat which will make the area look even bigger.
cardio is the only way to get rid of fat.

they do work but there are better ways with faster results,, try leg raises , lay on your back and raise your legs a few inches off the ground and scissor kick for as long as your can,, feel theburn in your abs and your legs.. this engages all of you ab muscles,,,and helps tone your legs..im a long time runner and this is what we do...
