imho, it's bc alot of ppl in this country are fundamentalist christian to the point of xenophobia when it comes to other faiths. they are comfortable in their own saran wrap vision of how the world should be that they only have respect for what they feel is "normal". a Muslim lady asked the same question when she was searched at the airport bc she was wearing hijab, and the nun behind her in full habit was let on the plane w/no questions asked. i have Muslim friends that ask the same question. it's not fair, and things should change. if they are goin' to be searched, so should Sister Mary Frances that gets by bc she's a nun. no preferential treatment. p.s. i also think hijabs are incredibly beautiful. <28 yr old wiccan.

CHOICE: Nuns choose to wear hijabs. In parts of this wolrd wearing ahijab is not a choice. You can go to jail in parts of the muslim world for not wearing whatever covering is mandated by the state. If I go to say Saudi Arabia, I would have to wear the burqa or whatever its called there. Not a choice, an imposition.
CHANGE: Though one chooses to nun they have to meet certain requirements to become nuns. They have to change thier life. All you have to do to wear a hijab is be a female.
DIFFERING PERCEPTIONS: In many parts of the muslim world if you stand a woman in a hijab next to a woman not in a hijab, people will assume the woman in the hijab is a good muslim and is at least vain and overly influenced by the West at worst a prostitute. Stand a nun next to a normally dressed woman in the west, you could be seeing 2 nuns. A nun and a college student, a nun and a minister. Society doesn't automatically assume the woman not wearing a hijab is a prostitute.
those are some of the reasons

Security. In our day and age, things are getting out of hand, and much of it is in the Islamic community. There's now been some high profile incidents wherein a criminal managed to escape by dressing up in a hijab. They couldn't identify the culprit in those cases, because his face was mostly hidden, and they didn't want to remove the veil and offend.
The nun's habits never cause that sort of confusion because the face is visible (nor is it associated with violence psychologically or by current events).
The crackdown on hijabs makes it possible to identify people easier. That in itself is grounds enough to do it.

If a persons heart is pure the radiance of God will shine forth
from the face.
Covering the face is up to the individual.
Tradition is the key word regarding this question.
Modesty is diminishing in the world today. The veil is often worn as a sign of modesty. This is a personal privilege given to all women. They should follow what their heart tells them to be appropriate not what religion dictates.
The religious traditions within the world are constantly in a state of flux. Times change, people change, so let the heart be the guide as to what must be or not be worn.

I am not christian. But I am in total agreement with you. In my opinion islam is-lame. And if I was you, I would report your boss. I think the news papers would have a hey day with a story like that. And why work for such an idiot (infidel) anyway. Choose somebody of much more worth.

I thnk its the way our faith is beng potrayed in the media, where they make us hijabi's look like opressed women who have no choice but to do as their husbands say. Some don't go to the effort of understanding the rights that women have been given in islam and quite rightly mentionned in the quran.
Hiab is a symbol of modesty
You look at me and call me oppressed,
Simply because of the way I'm dressed,
You know me not for what's inside,
You judge the clothing I wear with pride
My body's not for your eyes to hold,
You must speak to my mind, not my feminine mold,
I'm an individual, I'm no mans slave,
It's Allahs pleasure that I only crave
I have a voice so I will be heard,
For in my heart I carry His word,
"O ye women, wrap close your cloak,
So you won't be bothered by ignorant folk"
Man doesn't tell me to dress this way,
It's a Law from God that I obey,
Oppressed is something I'm truly NOT,
For liberation is what I've got
It was given to me many years ago,
With the right to prosper, the right to grow
I can climb moutains or cross the seas,
Expand my mind in all degrees
For God Himself gave us LIB-ER-TY
When He sent Islam,
To You and Me...

Honestly, I have NEVER heard of a Muslim woman being accosted for wearing her hijab. Yes, people may speak amongst themselves about her and Muslims in general and secretly pity her, but I have never seen anyone disrespect one. They are probably all too afraid to do or say anything to her, lest they encouner the wrath of CAIR.
The real question, seriously...is why do we have to wear hijabs when we visit muslim countries? The when in Rome argument is moot, because non-muslim nations welcome you with open arms and allow you to do pretty much whatever you will.

this is because of racism , every american thinks that it is a holy duty to think that all muslims are terrorists and evil and bad and they should mock them . The truth is that islam as any other religion in the world has its good followers who are good persons and other followers who either are bad persons or does not understand the religion very well
