They are ferromagnetic, which means they react to a magnetic field.

If you heated one with a blowtorch and let it cool under the influence of a strong magnetic field, it would magnetize.

Talk to a heavy equipment servicing shop, and see if they have any burnt-out steel ball bearings they're willing to give you.

they CAN be...another source for ball bearings is any shop which repairs automotive brakes,axles,etc.
