Canada prides itself on multiculturalism, tolerance and politeness, and this is true 99.99 percent of the time.

Large-city Canada is very cosmopolitan, very safe and very clean, and much more friendly than you'd expect a big city to be.

Rural Canada tends to be very white, but still very tolerant and polite. Even small-town diners may have a Chinese dish or two (Canada's third-largest population group).

Rural Quebec can be a hard palce to get by without knowing any French, but even a few basic words, especially phrases of politeness, go a long way.

Religion is not generally worn on the sleeve, so to speak, like it is in the US.
