Godspell is really a non-sensical show with 70's music that is adaptable to any circumstance. It's a lot of fun to be in, and if the actors get the audience involved it can also be very interesting, but the plot is basically just a bunch of different parables in the bible and then the death of Jesus. I've seen it in a junk yard like the original, and then with a couple new songs added from the revival from off-Broadway, and I've seen it set in a garage with a "band", in a cafe/restaurant kind of thing, and then when I was in it we did it in an attic and we were all supposed to be children playing dress up, so we started with just black leotards on and put our costumes on while we sang the opening number. Typically it's a very small cast, only about 7 people, but I did it with 17 people, so it can work in various different ways, which makes it a great show for high schools or community theatres. I can't really say if this is a good show or a bad show it really just depends on your taste. I've heard some people say that they loved it and it is one of their favorites, and then my dad and little brother say that it was the stupidest thing they've ever seen me in......so I'll let you decide!

It's a wonderfully whimsical play - although there is no real story line as it's based on the parables of Jesus according to the Gospels. So read up on your Gospels - with close attention to Matthew ( I believe ). The songs are great - the costumes should be those of thrift-shop "clowns" more or less - very colorful and "groovy," to coin a phrase from my youth. But it can be disjointed and haphazard - especially if you go looking for something along the lines of Lerner & Lowe or Jerome Kern etc.
Now, before you go and laugh at this, remember what makes this a classic is that it doesn't take a lot of cast, the songs are easy to learn, the set is easy to construct, and the costumes are from thrift shops, it's pretty easy for most mixed audiences to digest. Remember, this was the height of the "JESUS!" and Anti-war movements of the early 1970's. Nixon hadn't been impeached yet, the Viet Nam war was going badly, Kent State U/I and other college protests were raging, we'd just discovered how deadly drug abuse can be etc. The country needed something bright and happy for a change.
Go, enjoy the spectical. Oh, and consider reading both the old and new Testaments - it's a good read and there are a lot of good lessons to consider (if only that things that were relevant 2000 years ago still have relevance today).

Godspell is a lot of fun to perform and enjoy as an audience member.... I had the pleasure of being in a professional production guest directed by John Michael Tebelak himself, the creator of the show, before he died. He gave us (the cast) a lot of information on how and why he and Stephen Schwartz came up with the concept. Go see it, support your friend, and "Prepare ye..." for a great experience!

No, but I have performed in Carousel, Oklahoma, The Fantasticks and Charlotte's Web. Of the four, only Carousel was a high school production. The others were community theater.

I've never seen it, but how about at least going to support your friend and showing how proud of him or her that they got a part in such a well-known production :) It may also be nice to bring a little gift to give to your friend at the end of the show such as flowers or a bottle of body spray that (he or) she may like in a gift bag with tissue paper ;)
