I was driving home last night and suddenly I heard a grinding noise coming from the front of my car. Could it be the wheel bearing? I managed to drive home with it squealing, (not far).
Sometimes the squealing stopped for a while then started. It got worse when I steered to the right.
Shall I take the wheel off and have a look?

It is a Volkswagen Passat TDI 1.9 Turbo Diesel. I've had the cambelt changed not long back.

Any ideas before I get the jack out or what to look for? Or a good website/forum?

Hope you can help.

Know it all might be right.

Had some squealing for the past bit or it was 5 months ago then went away?
Does the grinding only occur during braking?
The squeal is all the time?
The squeal gets worse when turning a certain direction?

This would be a sign that your brake pads are totally consumed and the backing plate has contacted the rotor which may have already be ruined- patently unsafe to drive !

Hope this helps you out, sorry

probably the wheel bearing, if it were the brakes, you would feel the car having a hesitation from the pads. The wheel bearing should also cause a vibration in the steering wheel.

sounds like a loose wheel bearing. shake the wheel. It should not shake. Jack it up and turn it . Could also be a cvjoint. Check to see if the rubber boot is ripped. If it is ripped for sure the problem.

Take the wheel off see what you find, if your brakes arent obviously worn its most likely a bearing.

how about looking at your left front wheel bearing. that shows up more on a right turn.

I think that your brake cylinder may have failed, you should find some brake fluid escaping from the cyliner at the disc. First, check you brake fluid though.

front brake pads are worn out, and possibly ruining your rotor.
