I have five cockatiels after I got finished purchasing my latest two companions, Switch and Angel. They're great. One sings opera and the other is very friendly, but they have this thing where they keep pooping in the water dish! I don't mean on accident, like a poop just happens to "fall in" but they'll sleep on the water dishes, preen themselves on the water dishes and guess where their poop goes... In the other 3 birds drinking water. Before you ask, the cage is 5 foot x 3 foot x 2.5 foot and they have PLENTY of perches, and they are not getting picked on. It takes them less than an hour to turn a perfectly clean cup of water into something that resembles the green slime from Double Dare. I feel stupid saying this, but do they like drinking their own poop water? Do they make some type of coop cup that has a covered top? Or is this scenario just completely unusual? Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is very unhealthy for your birds......You can/should buy a water dispenser which is enclosed and has a drinking spout on the bottom. These types of drinking bottles are clipped to the outside of the cage, the spout at the bottom pokes through the bars of the cage. These are more hygienic for your birds as they do not allow droppings to enter the water.

Try putting a shallow pin tin in the bottom of the cage, or if you let them out to play, put it somewhere, that they can use to play in, maybe they want a bath. But mine does the same thing, his water cup is actually on the large door, which I leave open at all times during the day, so I keep those cards that comes in magazines, and tape them to the top of the door, bent up so that if he sits on the top of the door, the card catches it, and it doesn't go into his water cup. Otherwise, I am constantly washing and refilling his water cup. His cage is large, and his water cup is open at the top. But some cups are covered, but I have not found any to fit this big cage. So until I do, the cards work pretty good.

I have a female Eclectus that poops in her water dish also. I have been dealing with it for years. I believe it is just a place to poop. Sometimes she sits on the water to wet her bum (she is a breeder), and then goes back into her nest box and sits on her eggs. Most pet stores carry crock dishes that are shaped so that it would make it more difficult to get completely in them to poop. You might also consider using water bottles instead of coop cups...most birds will take to a water bottle easily.

no, they dont like it and its not good for them - they can catch all sorts of infections from parasites to bacterial problems.

get them the tall water dispensers with the tiny opening at the bottom instead of the dishes.
