A rainforest is simply a forest that has a very high rainfall - I think it's 1750mm a year and upwards, they can be tropical or temperate. Tropical rainforests lie close to the equator between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, temperate rainforests are further north and south of the equator.

The largest of all the rainforests is the tropical Amazon rainforest in the northern part of South America (Brazil, Peru, Columbia, Bolivia etc).

Other notable tropical rainforests are found in the equatorial regions of Africa, Central America, southeastern Asia, northern Australia and Papau New Guinea. Temperate rainforests exist in Canada, Alaska, New Zealand, some sates in the US including CA and OR, Scandanavia and other north European countries.
