ive been looking at cocktail recipes, but all the measurements are in liquid ounces (oz) and i have no idea how much liquid this actually equates to.
is one oz. equivalent to a full shot glass?

Shot glasses come in a multitude of sizes and typically range anywhere from 3/4 to 1-1/2 oz (sometimes larger). So generally speaking, a shot glass will put you in the neighborhood of 1 oz.

If you're making a cocktail and you need to measure, the best bartending tool to use is a double jigger (it's hourglass-shaped and looks like two differently sized stainless steel shot glasses with their bottoms stuck together). The smaller size is usually about 3/4 oz. and the larger size is 1-3/4 oz. Use the smaller size to measure (over the cocktail glass) and "overpour" the measurement slightly - this will yield about 1 oz. of liquor.

Bartending is NOT an exact science - if you're off slightly one way or another, chances are nobody will notice. If you're simply making cocktails at home, just keep practicing (and drinking the results, with friends if necessary) until you have a refreshing drink you can enjoy.

While the most common measure of liquid volume encountered in bars and nightclubs everywhere is a single shot, the equivalent of 1 1/2 fluid ounces, other typical shot sizes include the double shot (3 ounces, or double the amount of a single) and the pony shot (a smaller 1 ounce serving for fine liqueurs and aged spirits).

no. standard a standard "shot" has 1 and 1/4 liquid ounces. This is standard at most bars and restuarants. However, when I take a shot I like to ask for a double shot which is basically 2 and 1/2 ounces!

I use the 3 count method, which you will find bartenders use. Pour, not slow or fast, for 3 seconds and you will find it is around a shot, 1 1/2 oz.
