Algae and mold can grow in bottles of still water if you keep them for too long. If you continually refill one bottle, make sure you don't keep using the same bottle for more than two weeks. Listeria, although that isn't a fungus but a possibly deadly bacteria.
The best thing to do is to wash it and put it in the FREEZER, as that should take care of the bacteria.

1. If you are going to use water bottles repeatedly, clean them with hot water and soap. I've seen many sources that cite storing your bottles in the freezer, but none of them remind your to CLEAN them first. Please do.

2. Don't share them with anyone else. Mucus transmits nasty things.

3. Lots of nasty fungi and bacteria thrive in moist environments including: Invasive Group A Streptococcal Infection (GAS).

4. Don't fill your bottle with water from one of those large tubs of ice and water that are so common at sports games. Beware of cross contamination from dirty bottles and hands.
