I could never get this - We have people living on welfare and foodstamps because they claim they can't get a job, yet we are hiring workers from other countries to do these jobs. What happened to performing a day's honest work?
Before I starting renovating and flipping houses, I worked every job immaginable from picking strawberries, waiting tables, and cleaning houses. There's no shame in hard work. So why can't welfare recipiants do the same type of work? Why are we paying them to sit on their butts?

A long time ago, I made a comment that one thing great about Mexicans is that I never saw them beg in the streets. So far I found two Mexicans compared to the massive amount of panhandlers in Los Angeles. I thinks its admirable of Mexican culture is that their Pride keep them off the streets. I think some Liberals got carried away at being too sensitive towards those less fortunate. I keep hearing stuff about how humiliating for Welfare recipient, homeless, and prisoners to do certain jobs. I've known people prior to CLinton fixing Welfare. SHe told me why bother working as a receptionist when she can collect a check for doing nothing. I was appalled. A lot of people in AMerica believe that they are too good to do certain jobs. I have a feeling that most of them are no longer eligible to go on welfare. I think they just decide not to get paid. I use to get upset when I use to enter bad neighborhoods and see people who I know was on welfare party constantly. Frankly if people are given hand outs, they should be living very modest lives. I haven't been to the bad neighborhoods for a while, so I don't know what's it like lately. I do believe that Welfare is self perpetuating. It takes the fight out of people and a lot of them stop trying.

Yes.....we have people on walfare and there are some who could get out and work and do those jobs. Problem is alot of these people don't live where the jobs are. I doubt very seriously many are going to uproot their families and move across country for a minimum wage job when they're barely eating. We have a HUGE influx of illegals here and it's not for farm work. They are factory jobs etc. construction.....many came here because they had family members here and because we had a devistating tornado a few years back. Just like any area hit by a catastrophy you are swarmed by all sorts of people taking advantage of a horrible situation. Once the worst was finished they never left......and with the phony ID's and all, have taken jobs the citizens need. We've had massive layoffs and alot more needing work and increasingly more illegals comming here as well and driving citizens out of business for easy access of cheap illegal labor. When you're poor you don't have access to where all the jobs are. You can't afford a quick jet ride to the other coast for a job interview for a minimum wage job. Or a part time job or a seasonal temporary job. You try and bloom where planted..... It seems many from Katrina were given oppertunities after they were able to get out of those areas.....which is most likey why so few have returned. Obviously.....as it was....there wasn't enough work for the people who lived there. There are also many working that are getting benefits because the job isn't paying enough to live on. So they are doing what they can and this influx of illegals is making the situation worse because they are getting benefits and lying about the income they receive while taking jobs people need. I lived in Florida and we had alot of illegal workers there doing work at the ferneries. You CANNOT afford a 45,000 truck, insurance, raise 8 kids, pay rent and utilities on that pay, buy gold jewlery, eat and shop like Paris Hilton and party all the time. I don't care how good you are at managing money. So they were working at the fernery, claiming benefits and getting sect.8 housing by lying about the income they got...showing their welfare card and stocking up at the food pantrys and churches, then sold drugs, guns, opened flea markets to sell stolen goods or pawned them and made other unreported money on the side doing lawn work etc most of the time with the stolen tools and equipment from someone else. Many of our citizens....because they are tracked....can't get away with stuff like that!! There are laws that say you can't do that and we know you risk going to jail for doing it while they're looking the other way for the illegals. I know here I'm not allowed to make sandwiches at home and go and sell them on the street corner, with the food I got from welfare and the food pantries and not report that income and then qualify for utility aid and everything else. Darn....I could print up bogus college degrees and get a better job. Point is...are you going to abide by the law or not?

It's not just the welfare recipients who are lazy. I saw something on TV about a couple in California who run a large landscaping business. They both stated that they tried to get their 20-something children to learn the business by doing landscaping work, and couldn't get them to do the hard work involved! They didn't hire illegals, although 95% of their workforce is native Hispanic.

Some people have the work ethic; others don't. I think it's ingrained at an early age. Growing up in a rural area, like on a small family farm, you don't have a choice. You wake up at dawn, you work hard all day, or your family suffers. I think all Americans - welfare recipients as well as rich kids - would benefit by spending summers living and working on farms - planting, plucking, picking, baling. Plus doing domestic work - cooking, cleaning, gardening. Most Americans (farm families are the rare exceptions) think they're too good to do manual labor. In this respect, immigrants are 1,000 times better than Americans. Americans have become spoiled and work-shy.

the respond is by way of the fact the government does not own the farms. Farms are owned by inner maximum agencies, who can hire whoever they want. If the government makes welfare extra profitable than what the farmers are offering, then there is not any rationalization for all people who's eligible for welfare to pass to the farm.

Because there's money in pandering to illegals. Illegal immigration is organized crime. Any time you have organized crime, there are huge somes of money to be made from all the support aspects of the crime. Welfare doesn't have any redeeming aspects because the government pays for it. Also, welfare fraud can be punished severely and probably is more likely to be punished than illegal immigrants and those who hire, harbor and help them. Therefore, all we really need to do is enforce the laws we have, ensure that every able-bodied person works in some capacity for his welfare check and viola --problem solved. Welfare recipients won't stay on welfare if they have to work to get the check. The pay is better on the outside. Since you are one of the people who does hard work, why don't you go to the link with the CNN website and e-mail your senators and representatives demanding welfare reform and law enforcement for our illegal immigrants? That would be a big help in letting these elected officials know that we're sick of their lazy butts not doing the jobs they were elected to do and it will also let them know that we citizens still care about what is happening to our country. Thanks-- I hope you'll all do it.

We always tell our kids and everyone we know -- there is no job that is beneath you. Ditch diggers build foundations, toilets must be flushed, food must be obtained, we need a roof over our head and clothes on our back. Therefore welfare without work is beneath us all except those who are bed-ridden, who are paralyzed and can't move, or are so brain damaged that they can't do anything for themselves. Therefore, there should be jobs for everyone -- even those in wheelchairs.

Working in the fields is a job that Americans do not want to do but I agree that these jobs could be filled by those collecting welfare.

been wondering that very thing for years

When I was in college I worked 3 part time jobs ,
was a full time student, a cheerleader, had a boyfriend and no car. I left the house about 7:00
and usually didn't get home till after dinner. Later if we had a game.
I really don't think some people know what it means to work your tail off for something.

I assure you, my children do, and (what a surprise) it makes them feel like competent people.

Because thanks to illegal immigrants who work for next to nothing employers wont pay a realistic wage for the job. Of course, the rules also need to be tightened up to force, able bodied legal welfare recipients to go to work. .

most states do make people on welfare work for their money now, but i agree with you, alot of these would not have to go through welfare to get help if all these illegals weren't here. i too have work every kind of job there is, and would do it again if i needed to. no the shame is to run from your country to invade a country your not wanted in!!!!

Well its a pity that there are several people on the welfare and yet the immigrants are readily fixed on jobs you think these welfare citezens should get.
If you really want a genuine answer look at it in this way: For an employer to maximise on his earnings, he/she needs an employee who will contribute to the maximum in terms of services rendered. Iam not saying the citezens are lazy but may be they ask for alot more than the Immigrants?
