It's a matter of personal preference. I have had goods damaged in both by careless airport staff. now we own a motorhome. Life is much better

It's just a matter of preference.
I have had both kinds and there are good things and bad things about them both.
Personally I have come to prefer the soft suitcases. They are practical cause when they are empty they are really light and don't take up a lot of room. But you have to be very careful if you are packing something that can break.
The hard ones are usually heavier, but more solid. They take up alot of space, but protect what's inside.
I think the most important thing when it comes to suitcases is that you find the right size for your need. Not to big, cause then it will usually get to heavy and you'll have to pay lots of over weight...Not to small cause then you can't fit everything.
It's also important for me that the suitcase has weels and is easy to pull. Yes, at the airports they have carts you can put the suitcases on, but at the hotell and other places you will most likely have to handle the luggage on your own.
Good quality, the suitcases go through a lot. It's important that the material is strong, and that the handles and everything can stand all the things the suitcases go through.
One tip - put a bright sticker, tape, sign on your suitcases so it is easy for you to find it.
Have a nice trip!

Hard protects better but weighs more so if you've got a strict limit ie Ryan Air or the Greek Islands then soft.
For most real airlines and especially at Gatwick Airport I'd go for a solid case.

If you do a lot of travelling it's worth spending on a really decent hard one, with good locks it will probably last a really decent lenght of time- sadly had experience of someone tampering with a soft one's zip and the camera and other bits gone!! and now days with not being allowed to carry much in hand luggage the thieves often go for the easy soft type.

I just bought a suitcase with wheels and handle and also an expanding lid for 20 quid from an outlet village. It was by antler and is guarenteed for 5 years.
Just find the nearest outlet village to you and look up the shops that they have on the net.

You can find inexpensive but good luggage on overstock.com and as to which is better? Well both have good points. Hard is more secure while soft is lighter in weight. Choose something that will best suit your needs and your wallet. The most expensive is not always the best.

With the budget and charter planes they are very restricted on weight of cases. We used the plastic cases for years, but found we were allowed 20kgs allowance, but the case weighed 2 to 3 kgs. So we went back to soft cases.

I personnelly would go for the hard case as it is mor likely to stay in good condition were a soft case would get squashed by other cases and if you are taking anything valuable they wont be protected propelly :) hope i helped

I have had a hard one since the 80's and use it a lot. Make Delsey. You get what you pay for.
