Anything with buttons that makes interesting sounds. Doesn't need to expensive one too. Children at that age do not distinguish between cheap and expensive toys (parents do, though) and there is a chance the child will play with the box as much as he plays with the toy.

I always go with a stuffed animal for a child that young. The reason that I don't get a toy car or a super-hero action figure is because they don't know about those things yet. They want something they can cuddle with, something that they can feel or something they can sleep with.

Developmental toys are the way to go. Lamaze has some of the best and can be found in most toy stores and prices start around $12.

Hi, how about a personalized book? Kids love to hear their own name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Sesame Street, Three Little Pigs, Mother Goose, Farm Animals, Noah's Ark, Spider-Man, Batman, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful & unique gift... Good Luck!

When they are that young, I would persoanlly just buy cloths. I did that for my two nieces until they were old enough to really play with a lot of their toys and appreciate having so many toys.

something small, colorful and inexpensive. He's one after all. At this point you can get a way with just cake, icecream and a few friends. Just as long as you have pictures. Later on, though when they get older...well, then you better hold on to your wallet because it'll be in for a ride. Until then save your money.
