You really need to secure your trash/wastebasket. I have 2 Bloodhounds that are huge dumpster divers. We put our bin behind a door secured with a hook and eye.

Oh yes the great bin war.
Only won this by getting a smaller bin that fitted into a cupboard that is next to the wall & opens away from the wall so noses & paws cant open it.
All large rubbish goes straight out into the bin thats shut in the shed.
Leave the shed open & then have to clear up the mess.
I will be happy when we get whellie bin.
Best of luck.

Answer you can't!! Dogs are scavengers and they still scavenge anything and everything!
The only way I ever manage to resolve the snout down the bin and the bin contents all over the house problem is to put the bin on the kitchen surface where he can;t knock it off....

AH yes the dog food bin war----
Putting it in the closet may work - I don't know I didn't have a spare closet...
Bunging the lid down sometimes works - my dogs chewed the bungee in half (sigh)
A screw top lid can may work - mine all learned to put there nose on the lid & walk around the can till it unscrewed- fortunatally It was a shipping can and had loops to put cable ties through to stop pilfering - one snap fasner between the loops and I won the food bin war (except when I forget to fasten it - and they always check)
Then there was the trash can war (its on the wall outta reach)- the oven door war (child lock) the refrigerator door war (they went through two styles child locks - I drilled for a hook & eye) ----
why do people WANT smart dogs?

Well.. You could put the bin on the surface or try and get him scared of the bin. Although my dog does the bin trick aswell, he is very greedy, he used to attack it in the night, so we started putting the bin on the surface during the night or when we weren't around.

Don't put any substance on the bin that would hurt your dog. Remove the bin from his presence for a while if he is obsessed with it. When you do return it, continue to correct him as soon as he starts towards it, and reward him with praise (or a treat in the beginning) when he listens to you. You are on the right track, just don't forget the praise and good boy things. He is not trying to be bad, just needs encouragement to be good. With time and consistency he will understand your commands.

We had the same problem - ours used to push down the lid to get the food - so we got a roll-lidded bin. He hasn't worked that one out yet (it's been 3 years). Good luck!

I am not clear on what a bin is and why is he knocking it over. What is a bin???? What is in this bin????
Oh....duh@me. Maybe he is kocking it over because he is hungry. Maybe you need something more heavier with a lid on it that he can't knock it over..Oh heck, I have no clue what I am talking about I didn't even know what a bin was lol.

Also we take out things that smell and put it in the large bin outside.
