Considering that America hasn't won a war since 1945,
we will most likely be there until the realization that we can't change people who don't want to change. Revolution has to be initiated from within (U.S. 1776 case in point).
There is no history of wars ever being won solely by precision bombing or special operations. If you are committed to the cause, then you must break the backs of the total population (Japan WW2). Though we are fighting an insurgency, where the enemy is not afraid to die, I believe if the option for the enemy was to either stop fighting or face total destruction, they would fold rather than have their entire nation destroyed. Otherwise what would they be dieing for?
Another problem is rotating troops. This never worked simply because of the etro. There are two immediate thoughts on a troops mind; keeping my buddy alive, and how many more days do I have left!
I have 20 years of military service to my credit, been there done that.

Not much longer. The Bible says the Medes and Persians will form an alliance with Libya and Ethiopia.
Ez 38:5.
Iran used to be called Persia. So I'm guessing the Shia in Iraq and Iran will get together, and then later
work with Libya and Ethiopia to try and block off the Suez Canal. Which would destroy Shipping and Trade, and wreck the World economy. (Look where they are on the map).
In order for them to do this, there will have to be no opposition from the rest of the World for a while.
So I see the U.S. being forced, (by it's own people), to pull out before too long.

I think we will be operating there for years to come, just like what happened in western Europe with the Cold War.
It might be in a more limited capacity, but I think the presence will be there. Literally for perhaps decades.
I don't really foresee a definite end point right now.
There will not be any security there until everyone over there kills each other out of religious and ethnic hatred.

perhaps when the liberal electorate FINALLY realizes there is no magic bullet or pill regarding al qaeda, despite what the pelosi/reid regime says and loses in 08, then we can win it. the cause will be the liberals getting out of the way.
