It all depends on which part of the world you are in and who do you need to speak to. The accent of any language changes every few miles you move. Same goes with English. If you are in a non-English speaking country, you can speak this language in an accent that is clearly understood and comprehended by the natives of that place. The language will serve its purpose. Don't assume fake accents. It will only complicate things.

I'm not sure what you mean by "general" accent, but I'm assuming I would because I already basically speak with what is considered the "standard American accent." As for English as a whole, I don't believe there is such thing as a "general accent." I have heard that the American accent IS the flattest of the English accents (not necessarily a good thing) and is often easier for non-native speakers to learn because we speak in fewer octaves and it isn't as important to speak as precisely. It's kind of like the color brown, it's not very colorful, but it's the easiest color to make.

American's Hollywood accent is the most general accent!!! But the best is still the British accent.

If you are a guy, then speak in British accent. The females will be all over you just for that and the males will dislike you.
Depends on what you want.

Now if you don't want to draw attention to yourself, then speak in American accent.

Just be yourself. Speak the way you want to. You are what you are, as far as accent is concerned, both the countries, have their own accent, speak in neutral accent. Don't try to be somebody, but yes, you can definitely learn to speak the way they speak.

The accent you speak with is dependant on who you are and where you are. I'm Viet but I was raised in Australia, thus attaining an Australian accent (a neutral accent).

Can't stand it! It's quite unattractive. But maybe I'm a bit biased because I'm British Asian. America's a fun place though :)

Speak using whatever you're comfortable speaking; I'm sure anyone who speaks either version of English will be perfectly capable of understanding you.
