Most antibiotics are on a 5/7 day course and that they don't provide pain relief. You should complete the full course taking at the intervals given to you by your dental surgeon and for the period that your dental surgeon says you should take them for. Remember that infections of this nature can take a while to clear up. You may be offered a further course of antibiotics if this well known antibiotic doesn't work on the first application.
Something that you should be aware of that there are more and more bugs that are getting more resistant to antibiotics as they mutate. Super bugs like MRSA are very hard to kill off now because of their ability to adapt and resist the antibiotics so developed.
Ask your dental surgeon which pain killer he/she would recommend to assist you with pain relief.

IT BASICALLY DEPENDS ON U, SOME PEOPLE GET RELEIF QUICKER THAN OTHERS. DONT FORGET THAT THE DRUG IS AN ANTIBIOTIC AND NOT A PAIN KILLER. THE DENTIST HAS GIVEN U THIS MEDICATION TO KILL OFF ANY INFECTION WHICH IS THE ROUTE OF THE PROBLEM, ONCE INFECTION IS CLEARED THEN THE PAIN SHOULD GO. TAKE SOME PARACETAMOL WHILE TAKING THE ANTIBIOTIC BUT BE CAREFULL THAT UR NOT ALREADY TAKING MEDICATION THAT HAS PARACETAMOL IN I.T . AS ITS NOW DAY 3 U SHOULD HOPEFULLY START FEELLING THAT THE PAIN IS STARTING TO CALM DOWN. DID U FEEL THAT THE PAIN WAS AT ITS WORSE LAST NIGHT? THEN HOPEFULLY THAT WAS ITS PEAK AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE PAIN SHOULD DIE DOWN GRADUALLY.
IF UR STILL IN TERRIFIC PAIN OR U FEEL THAT THE PAIN HAS GOT WORSE CALL UR DENTIST AND GET HIM TO SEE U AGAIN AS SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT, IF UR TAKING ANTIBIOTICS AND PARACETAMOL, HE WILL EITHER PRESCRIBE A DIFFERENT ANTIBIOTIC AND OR STRONGER PAIN KILLERS, BUT U MUST GIVE THE ANTIBIOTICS TIME TO WORK, THEY USUALLY DO START BY DAY 3, THEY DO FOR ME, THE PAIN GETS WORSE B4 IT GETS BETTER, THEN IT WILL GET TO ITS PEAK LEVEL AND WILL START TO GET LESS PAINFULL EITHER GRADUALLY OR U MAY WAKE UP TOMORROW AND THE PAIN IS NEARLY GONE.
IF THE PAIN GETS WORSE EVERY DAY AND ITS UNBEARABLE PAIN THEN UR DENTIST MAY G IVE U ANOTHER X-RAY TO SEE WHAT THE PROB IS. IF HE CANNOT SEE ANYTHING ASK HIM WHAT THE CHANCES R THAT U MAY HAVE A SMALL CYST AT THE TIP OF THE TOOTHS ROOT IT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO BE SEEN ON X-RAY BUT ITS BLOODY PAINFULL, SO PAINFULL U R CLIMBING THE WALL. NO PAIN KILLERS TOUCH IT APART FROM PETHADINE. I SHOULD KNOW I HAD IT. IF U DO HAVE A CYST U MAY KNOW ALL ABOUT IT WHEN U GET THE INJECTION, I WAS INJECTED IT DIDNT HURT, BUT AS HE PUMPED THE ANESTHESIA IN IT WAS HURTING LIKE MAD AND WOULDNT FREEZE, HE KEPT GIVING ME INJECTION AFTER INJECTION AND THE MORE HE PUMPED INTO MY GUMS THE PAIN GOT MORE AND MORE UNBEARABLE. I LOST COUNT ON HOW MANY JABS I HAD, MY WIFE HELD MY RIGHT HAND AND MY KIDS HELD MY LEGS AND THE CLEANERS WERE WATCHING AS THEY WERE WAITING TO CLEAN THE SURGERY WHICH WAS WELL PAST CLOSING TIME, IN THE END I WAS SUFFERING SO MUCH PAIN I TOLD MY DENTIST TO GO 4 IT AND JUST DIG IT OUT AS I COULDNT TAKE NO MORE, EVENTUALLY HE GOT A PART OF A ROOT THAT WAS SUPPOSSED TO HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND RIGHT AT ITS TIP WAS THIS TINY CYST, THATS WHAT WAS CAUSING ME ALL THAT PAIN.
I WAS DRENCHED IN SWEAT ALL OVER, MY CLOTHES WERE WET MY HEAD FELT LIKE A SPONGE . I WAS GIVEN PETHADINE AND WENT HOME AND DROPPED INTO BED AS I WAS EXHAUSTED, THE NEXT MORNING I HAD TO GO 4 DIALYSIS, AS I STOOD ON THE SCALES I LOST A WHOLE STONE IN UNDER 2 DAYS!!!
GOOD LUCK I HOPE I HAVENT SCARED U, BUT DONT FORGET TO MENTION A CYST IF PAIN GETS SO UNBEARABLE AND NOTHING SHOWS UP ON X-RAY.

its an antibiotic to get rid of infection , it has nothing to do with pencillian, im allergic to penicillian so I take erythromycycin
it is not a pain medication, but should start working on the infection anytime now, ask for motrin 800 or just call & ask your dentist

Antibiotics generally take 24 hours to start to work. As a regular sufferer of sinus misery I can empathise with you. I would say if you're still feeling really grotty and not improved at all you should return to your doctor and get a change of antibiotic.

Erythromycin is a slow acting bacteriostatic antibiotic, it also produces a lot of nausea. It is thus generally reserved for patients who are allergic to penicillin or tetracyclines.
Even so 3 days is pushing it and I might suggest another consult, a telephone one might be adequate.

Erythromycin is a penicillin-based antibiotic NOT USED for pain. Talk to the doc who did this and let them prescribe some pain medication for you. A RECOMMENDATION: Hydrocodone / Ibiprophen combined. That is some of the best over-all pain medication that I've found. It's prescription, and it works well for any pain, besides normal headache, that I have.

my toothache began to subside after about a day, but i was still taking paracetemol to help ease the pain. Are you combining with some painkillers?
Just out of interest is there any reason why you were not prescribed penicillin instead of enthromycin?
