First off, if you don't intend to breed her, you should get her spayed. If for whatever reason she's left alone, there's a huge chance that a male dog can get to her and then you'll have some unwanted puppies on your hands. They're a HUGE deal of work - you don't want that if you don't have the time or dedication.
For dogs, their period is called 'going into heat', and it depends on the dog. Some go into heat 4 times a year, some only once a year. Humping doesn't necessarily mean they're having their heat cycle. Mounting is often just shows of dominance that have absolutely nothing to do with sex. Females will usually go into heat before their first year, but don't worry - if she hasn't had it yet, she should soon.

A male will breed any time allowed but a female will only breed while she is in heat. This happens about twice a year and is identified by swelling of the vulva and vaginal discharge. Once she starts showing these signs she will not breed immediately. Some dogs will breed from the first day of these signs while others won't for over two weeks! The time slot that they will allow breeding ranges from 1-17 days! Each dog is different in this but the good news is that there is a pattern. Once you figure out how long her heat was and the space between the heats she will stick to that pattern. Good luck!

You didn't say what kind of dog you had. Sometimes when they are small and don 't bleed much you can miss it. Some times it takes a year for a dog to come into heat. Depends really on the dog. One of my Shih Tzu's never had a heat cycle. So I know some dogs never come into heat. Rare but in some cases they can't. Just keep an eye on her..If she is small and doesn't bleed much..Around when you think her heat should start take a white tissue and wipe her. This is what I have to do with one of my Shih Tzu. Around her heat I start wiping her every day.. if I don 't I will miss it. Hope this helps.

Dogs do NOT get periods, they have HEAT CYCLES. Why isn't she spayed yet? You shouldn't be breeding her if that is your excuse for not spaying her. Book an appointment with the vet to make sure everything is alright, then book another one to get her fixed and reduce her chances of mammary cancer. Spaying her should also stop her instincts to hump things.

With some slow maturing dogs the first heat can be as late as 3 years. Its important to remeber that when you see the swelling & bleeding of a heat cycle THIS IS WHEN SHE CAN GET PREGANANT. SO take precautions to keep males away untill several days after the swelling goes down....

For the zillionth time ... dogs DO NOT have periods. Have her spayed straightaway before you have unwanted puppies on your hands. Humping is a domination thing - she is trying to tell you that she is the boss, so get her trained too.
