Certainly you are not suggesting that they claimed that Mary's birth was virgin in order to protect her reputation from religious zealots, are you?

If you're insinuating the the Virign Mary was forcibly raped by a Roman soldier, and then when she realised she was pregnant passed it off as an immaculate conception and said her son was to be that of God and the founder of a new world religion, I think you should be ashamed of yourself.

according to some records from back then yeah.
we can't be sure though. there's so many conflicting accounts as to what actually happened, even within the bible.
