Lots of canned beans, dried beans, big bags of rice, bulk burger, chicken base to make your own stock, frozen veggies, canned veggies, pastas, any meat you can freeze. Get ham hocks too. You can toss those in the freezer and that and a bag of bean mix and you have soup! Stay away from convenience foods if you can. You can even freeze sliced deli ham. Oh, and buy your own cheese in blocks and shred it yourself and that can go in the freezer too. Stock up on lots of flour, sugar, olive oil, canola oil, spices, that kind of thing.

Once you get a good larder going, you really only have to go to the store a couple times more for dairy and maybe fresh veggies.

I used to go a few months between grocery runs. I ended up learning how to make my own bread and tortillas because of it!

Stuff you should always have on hand...
Olive oil
canola oil
vinegars
dried spices (oregano, rosemary, basil, thyme, etc)
garlic
onions
potatoes
rices
pastas
bread crumbs
crackers
nuts
canned beans
canned tomatoes - crushed and whole
canned tuna and salmon
chicken, beef and veggie broths
frozen peas
frozen spinach
or other frozen veggies
(better for you then canned)
sugar
honey
milk
cornmeal
flours
eggs
cream
cheeses (especially parmesan - keeps forever)

I am sure I will think of a dozen more, but that's a good start!
