the computer is about six years old with 1.4 ghz pentinum 4 processor with 512 ram in it . I was wondering if i could use the dell windows xp professional disk to load on to this computer an sort of update it for a low budget upgrade since I have the disk here at my house now. Since the windows ME is not the best operating system at all . I could see benefits of having the windows XP Professional on it to extend the life of my dinosaur.

XP Pro should run fine on your system though the old 1.4Ghz processor might cause some lag.
If you have the disk anyway , there is no harm in trying yourself. If it does seem too slow for you , you can always go back to your existing system.

XP is superior to Me but still a long way short of ideal as an operating system - give Linux a try.

Yes sometimes you can,

Just up grade from that or do a full install of windows xp, However being a Dell disk this may only be a recovery CD.

And not a full version which means it will only installed on the computer it was made for. Just try it out it will say somthing like this software cannot be used on this computer system.

DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING UNTIL YOU TRY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

XP should run fine, my kids are using only a 550mhz p3 with 256mb ram running xp.

Hope that helps
