Alcohol is not prohibited as such, but neither is it recommended. It confuses the mind and damages the aura/spiritual bodies. It is classified as Tamasic foods (foods that are inpure, or damaging, such as meat, all fermented products, eggs, mushrooms, stale foods etc.)
The everyman is not banned from those foods but they are not recommended for both health and spiritual reasons. Brahmins (priests) and Yogis however, do not touch those tamasic foods, as they would lower the spiritual vibrations and counteract the benefits of the Yoga sadhnas.
Overall, comment sense and health reasons should drive people to avoid those foods as much as possible!
Hinduism does not seek to impose/ban things, as the monotheist creeds do, which are nothing else but control cults. Freedom of choice is paramount to true spirituality, as well as intelligent guidelines, not prohibition of things based on shoddy excuses/ superstitions.

Although I am a Hindu, I still drink alcohol...I think consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the bhagvad gita...However it is not prohibited in any of the other religious doctrines (such as vedas, upanishads and purannanas etc) because these are so old that when they were devised alcohol did not exist.
Unlike all the other man made religions, Hinduism is a promordial religion that is as old as the planet is. Hinduism, like a religion is SUPPOSED to be, is concerned with the soul and how the soul can be united with the creator...All the other religions only pay limited attention to the concept of god and more to rules and regulations.
Also, a major reason that alcohol is prohibited in Islam is because when the arabs became drunk (in pre-islamic times) they often raped women...whereas Indians were too civilised and sophisticated to allow that sort of thing to happen and thus in the Indian religion there was no incentive to prohibit alcohol.

Alcohol numbs your awareness...... it take you away from yourself...... it stresses the nervous system..... when the nervous system is stressed .... the thought that comes is negative..... destructive...... Hinduism doesn't follow any particular book.... it is more of a way of life than a religion..... it tells you what happens if you do something...... there are no do's and don'ts .......

I don't think any man-made religion would prohibit alcohol.
