Does his soul leave his body and go wandering around....

in most cases no.

in most cases, the soul mostly stays put and rests. think if you ever sit and sort your desk and papers and stuff. ... imagine that sleeping is a time your higher self can tend to such things while your concious self and body self rest.

some people its a little more complicated, some people's higher self is a bit more active and "busy" with things "here" and do other various traveling, and some people are even more busy than that.

wonderful answer from Amarendra IMO, btw.

the world is a much larger place than many people appriciate. the self as we generally know it, for many people at least, is only one facet of a large, complex jewel. it is nearly depressing to see so many people think such a small portion of existance is all that there is. they are missing so much. even in recognizing the rest is there, there is depth. even if you cannot yet see it.

In my opinion no. Mind/body problems are some of the trickiest philosophical problems in the world, but in my opinion any seperate part of your being called a soul or mind, if it even exists, stays whereever it was before you fall asleep, and is in the same place when you wake up.

Whatever be the scientific reasons for sleep, i shall try to answer it in spiritual terms. Please read on carefully.

The very word 'spiritual' indicates that the answer is not related to the physical materials like our body or this world but something more abstract i.e. spirit.

Life's only purpose is to know God (THAT after knowing which, we do not need to know anything else).

It is every life's purpose. We earnestly search for THAT in everything else around us -- without losing ourselves -- and never find THAT.

But God is very merciful and sends word through great Masters to tell us the way. He knows He is so near to us that we are not able to perceive Him ---- just like the photograph of our dearest kept very very near, almost on our eyes, is not recognizable. Also He is so vast to comprehend that humans act as in the famous story of the elephant and six blind men describing it variously like a wall, pillar, a thick rope, or a python -- and quarelling.

This is where mercyful God takes us to a situation of sleep in which our physical and spiritual healing is done. Our scientists tell us how the material body is healed; i shall try to explain below how spiritual healing is done.

Our mind is very extremely agile part of our body. The mind keeps remembering and taking care of the body every second. It also keeps us reminded of our body. That is its job, necessary for the existence of this body.

But in the process my spirit (i.e. 'I') starts mistaking its identity with the body and loses contact with God -- and is unhappy like a small child losing his Mother in a crowd.

The merciful Mother comes as sleep; calms the mind so that we can be nursed with spiritual food. Remember, we cannot get the feeling of existence of God till we forget identifying our spirit (ourselves) with the body.

May God bless all with His mercy always!
