The vet isn't really an option. About 5cm of lower back leg is exposed as well as loose skin :/

Someone left the gate open, dog went down to the creek came back cut. Could be from anything. Was bandaged for last 3 days, he just took it off though. It just looks raw, missing skin, and some skin (3mlthick) is loose. No bleeding or puss etc just red.

Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but the vet is always an option, and in should be your first.
For one thing, that loose skin NEEDS to be removed - it's going to become necrotic (die off) now, it won't just stick back on. Antiseptic cream won't stop this - antiseptic only reduces the level of bacteria, it won't stop infection setting in.
I'm sick of seeing dogs coming in with rotten, infected, 4 week old wounds covered up with manky, incorrectly applied bandages. That's how your dog is going to end up if you don't do the right thing by him.
The longer you leave it, the more it's going to cost you, so if you're worried about money take it to the vets NOW. A simple wound doesn't cost much unless you leave it.
What would you do if your child had a cut like this?

u answered the question urself, the dog needs to see a vet. The wound should definitly be covered up, and if u love ur dog you should get the help it needs. no animal should suffer like this, if u cant afford the vet, give the dog to some one who can afford to, or give the dog to a sanctuary where they will help the dog. the dog will be in immense pain if that wound gets infected, then ud have loads more problems to deal with, go on take it to the vet and get it seen too it'll be cheaper in the long run to do it now rather than having to do it later.

Give more details. What happened to your dog? What type of injury? Describe the flesh around and inside the injury. Is there mucous, pus, bleeding?
