Tanning fork now a day is given up method of assisting diagnosis but at some places it is still used for to get primary knowledge /! Mainly it is used in Ear problem where a vibrating tunifork is applied behind the ear on mastoid process to ask the victim for feeling the vibration in the ear. Or this may be kept in-betweens the fore head on point called nasion and patient is asked to say in which ear he feels more vibration? This is to appreciate his bone conduction on air conduction of the ear 1 Secondly vibrating tuning fork is placed on the melliolous that is the lower part of the ankle and patient is asked to say what feeling he has on either side? This is to find out his neural conduction in general ! Generally it is used for nerve conduction whenever is used! If satisfied plz give best answer mark so that I shall get 10 point! Always YouRsmE

Tuning forks are used to diagnose the following
1)Hearing defects --- This is done by "Rinni"s test and "Weber"s test. The tuning fork is excited and kept near one ear while the other is closed. It is also placed on the mastoid process ie the bony prominence of Temporal bone just behind the ear. This test is repeated on the other ear. Later the excited tuning fork is placed on the forehead . All the time patient responds when he hears better. These tests diferentiate between Nerve deafness and conduction deafness.
2)An excited tuning fork is placed on bony surfaces like shins,knee caps,Malleoli of feet, Radius and ulna,collar bone etc. Vibration sense and its perception is tested. Peripheral neuropathy is thus dignosed.
In diabetic neuropathy vibration test is lost first.
Music therapy is not much used.

I use mine to detect fractures.
By placing the resonating fork on the suspected bone the vibration makes the facture more noticeable confirming the problem, (without having to wait for / send the patient for an Xray)
Edit: I have read about cranial nerve testing for Diabetes using Forks, but can't really add much.

tuning forks relate to hearing as i have always understood but diabetes i don't think there is a connection, but i may be wrong about this its just my own assumption

They are used in ENT practice to distinguish between different types of hearing loss (conductive or neural) and in Neurology to look for evidence of loss of vibration sensation (seen in diabetes for instance).
