Had to do repair install from my Windows CD but now I can't download SP2 successfully. Get error 0x80246008 related to Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0.
Followed Microsoft help and found that the BITS sevice can't start on local computer, if I try to start get Error 1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run does not implement the service.
What should I do next?
Is it possible to work away with SP1??

Options;

1. ask a friend to download a copy of SP2 and install it manually (it is a .exe file when downloaded)
2. Buy WIndows XP With SP2 on disk

SP1 lacks a lot of security fixes that SP2 brought to the table

You do need SP2 for a whole bunch of reasons.

I suggest you RESET Background Intelligent Transfer Service and the Automatic Updates service. For this, please follow the steps given below:

1. Click Start --> select Run. In the Run box, type services.msc Click OK.

2. Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Right-click on it and select Properties.

3. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK.

4. Similarly find Automatic Updates service. Right-click on it and select
Properties.

5. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK.

6. Close the Services window.

[Please note that if the service is already started the "Start" button will be grayed out. In this case "Stop" the service and then "Start" it again. On the other hand if the service is not running, the "Stop" button will be grayed out. In this case "Start" the service].

It is possible to work with sp1. What happened that you needed to do a repair install. Is it possible for you to just REinstall windows? If it is possible that is my reccomendation. If you do then you should remove any partitions recreate a partition and do a slow format of your harddrive and then reinstall windows that should help the problem.

Of course you can stay w / sp1...many prefer it .
If you are d/loading from a disc..probably a dirty or scratched disc
If from internet then problem is w / your repair ..do it again
