A good doctor would have advised you that almost 50% of patients with IBS get worse on high fibre diets. Interestingly this group feel better on low fibre diets, but for a number of reasons there are not considered a good idea,On paper Colpermin, high dose peppermint oil is licenced to help. In my view it seldom does and just gives the patient indigestion.

Antispasmodics like mebeverine often help the cramp, but not the annoying fluctuating bowel habit.

The only drug I have found consistently helpful is amitriptylline in low dose 10-25mgs at night is usually sufficient. Once upon a time this drug was used as an antidepressant, now it's main use is as an atypical pain killer, especially good in neuralgia. In IBS it works as a smooth muscle relaxant.

Avoid Certain Foods

Alcohol, Soda, chocolate, coffee (and other caffeinated drinks) are common problem foods.
Foods high in saturated fat - such as butter, mayonnaise, cream, french fries, ice cream, red meats may also cause problems.
Monitor Your Dairy Intake
Some sufferers maybe Lactose intolerant, and should avoid milk. Yogurt (such as acidophilus) may still be used as the Lactose breaks down slightly differently. Again, it's a process of trial and error. If you eliminate dairy completely - be sure to consume other sources of protein.

Drink Plenty of Water

Eat little and often
Aim for 4-5 meals daily with small portions. Don't skip meals.

Experiment with High-Fiber Foods
Foods high in Fiber can help keep you more regular. Grains, Cereals, Beans, Fruit, and Vegetables all provide dietary fiber. Eat whole grain breads rather than white breads. Gradually introduce fiber - don't change everything at once!

I think like someone mentioned earlier, a diet a high in fibre is helpful, stay away from anything too yeasty like pizza and things such as onion and chillis my irritated IBS. There are plenty of useful books in bookstores that you could check out, some even include recipes.

A diet high in fiber and also lots of fruits and veggies for additional roughage. With fiber one way you can get it is thru whole grain breads.
