Reading helps a lot, yep. But so do professional learning programs that are paid for.

Well, don't just read. You have to read and understand why a sentence is written that way. Ask a friend or teacher to help you when you stumble upon grammar problems. Join an english class if you must. Buy grammar books will help. My english was quite bad few years ago. I do improve myself by reading books but choose wisely the books that you want to read. Some of them uses sentences that are difficult to understand (if your grammar is THAT bad) while others, such as the Harry Potter series, or simply any story books uses easier sentence pattern. Go for the genre that you like so that you can enjoy reading and learning at the same time. The most important thing is, you are willing to learn and put more effort to improve your grammar. Don't forget to practice your english through writing and speaking. Just reading won't help you. Good luck~

Not really...
My friend, who's Columbian, reads many many books but her grammar is abysmal. She improves through practice. I've bought her some books with exercises in them and I check over them. Her grammar is still really shaky, but there's been much improvement.
A couple of years ago, I really didn't understand how to use semicolons. Now, reading books by Virginia Woolf wouldn't have helped me [she uses a lot of semicolons]. Reading a grammar book that tells you how and why semicolons are used and practicing will help you.
Of course, this applies to all languages - not just English.

Reading works well. Try randomly picking a new word every morning from a dictionary and then a second word that means the same thing from a thesaurus and force yourself to use them at least five times throughout the day. Before you know it your grammar and vocabulary will greatly improve. Others will notice it before you will.

Reading does help a whole lot. Another way is to find someone who is really good at it and spelling. write stories and have them edit it. For me, this was the best way to improve.
Another way is to take a creative or business writing course. Many people go back and take high school courses if you don't want to go to a trade school or college.
You could also go to listen to speeches. Check around for seminars in your area and go only to listen for the purpose of learning.
