I don't find one better than the other. They are just a bit different and I understand both fine.

scramble - Why do people get mad when some Americans think everyone is from the USA on the internet when you just generalized the whole internet as American? That isn't an American thing, that's an internet thing.

Depends where you are. In India we learn the British English in school, and now learning to speak in the American style at the Call Centers.

Normal is relative. I've got a New England accent, so you'd probably think my english is terrible. But I think it sounds perfectly normal, and much better than whatever your accent is. Because it's what I speak, and what I'm familiar with. The foreign exchange students at your school probably just had thick accents. And as for the "royalty" thing, that's just ridiculous. I find the "Posh" accent as unbearable as anyone else, but no one talks like that naturally.

There was an Oscar -winning actress who was from England but played an American in a movie. She said speaking American made her mouth tired. I think British English is more proper, and probably not difficult for them to understand themselves.

English is more formal. America has so many different cultures and has borrowed from so many countries. There is a lot of slang in both places, however. I don't think that either necesarilly is easier or more difficult to understand, it just depends on what you're used to.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, Britain and America are two countries divided by a common language. I can get the British accent when its from people in London, but some people in the north are almost impossible to understand. Watch Snatch and listen to the pikies and that's how it sounds to me.

I have always studied Br. English and I thought it was easier than Am. English.....but I've started studying English phonetics this year and my professor teaches us Am. English....I've discovered that Am. English is easier to learn (I mean to pronounce and to transcribe).
I think it depends on what you are used to hear...once you are used to it,you find it difficult to understand other "kinds" of English language.
None of them are better.....they're just different.

It depends on what you're used to. Hell, some Americans have trouble understanding other Americans because they're from different regions.

Both cultures are adapted to speak English as they see fit for their own society's needs. Both are fine with me.
