When you put the vista disk in your drive reboot the computer and you will have the option of doing a clean install, formatting the drive and installing Vista, which will also delete all your other files on the drive, or you can install over XP or you can install Vista as a second operating system.

vista upgrades requires a WOKRING installation of XP. You no longer can just provide vista with a key/or quick CD check at the beginning of the installation process. Now you actually need a working XP installation on the harddrive.
There is some vista installation time detail here: but those are for clean install(on a reasonably fast computer).

Vista like all of Microsoft systems is between the very worse. Why do you issue that people around the international, including Dell desktops had to do away with Vista from from their new notebook, and reinstall homestead windows XP. To many proceedings. the only platform that Microsoft ever positioned out that became in basic terms approximately ninety% shelter, required very few severe updates and worked without issues became homestead windows 2000 Server. And that became by using fact the platform became outfitted for them in Australia, rather of Redmond, Wa. (MIcrosoft's homestead place of work). I used homestead windows 2000 sever till the bitter end. in no way had a issue with this platform. the only issue became finding sofware properly matched for the platform. and that's the reason I had to purchase a CD for homestead windows XP & homestead. massive mistake, you're able to be able to desire to have an entire apprehensive breakdown with Vista. no longer properly well worth the complication. The few issues which you have with XP, could be resolved. Even Microsoft has been compelled to enlarge the top of existence date for homestead windows XP systems. client complaining around the international approximately Vista. Minddoctor France

An upgrade needs something to upgrade, so to speak, so leave xp on and when you start the disk you'll be given various options. As for the time, that can vary wildly depending on your machine & setup.
