When working out, the best thing you can do is find an exercise you enjoy. The workouts that make people lose weight are the ones they stick to! So experiment: go for walks, swim if you can, run, buy a workout tape, just find something you enjoy doing and do it!
As for eating, if the key to weight loss were eating less, everyone could do it. I think thats part of the answer, but not all of it. The key for me is to FILL UP on less food. And doing that requires protein and fiber. I get some of each at every meal, and they keep me full and satisfied for hours. Some sources of each:
Fiber: fruits, veggies, whole grian pasta/bread/rice, many cereals (I like Whole Grain Total).
Protein: skim milk, eggs, lowfat yogurt, lowfat cheese, soy milk, lean cuts of meat like baked chicken and turkey.

to loose wieght you need to do 3 basic thingies
1. build some muscle (i suggest wieghts try 7-10 reps with a heavyish wieght and do that 3 times do some basics like bench press, biceps curls, crunches/sit ups, push ups, upright rows even? they seem good and easy)
2. do cardio (now you have muscle use it. Muscle burns something like twice or more fat than other things in the body so use it by doing cardio and that will speed up wieght lose)
3. try stay away from 'white foods' e.g. white sugar and white flour... basically thats it if it has one of those 2 things in it stay away from it they are evil they have no goodness what so ever and they also set off a gene in the body that makes you store fat but thats another story a rather long and involved one.
so remeber 1. get muscle 2. use muscle 3. dont eat things with white flour and white sugar in them

The best way to loose weight and not gain it back is the following:
Lots fresh vegetables, salads, chicken and fish. cut out sodas, Sugars etc. (I do not believe in diets per se or diet sugars etc)
You can have the occasional goodie. Cut down on the caffiene. Eat Butter not margerine, sparingly.
Just eat less of everything and you can divide this into 6 small meals not to feel so hungry. Treat yourself weekly with a desert or something you like. Stay away from fruit juices as they are calorie laden and full of sugar.
If not allergic to wheat whole wheat bread but no more than 2 slices a day.
Limit the fruit as it is full of sugar. Cut out fatty foods and snacks.

Eat 6 small but balanced meals per day. Your carbs should be high in fiber, your proteins should be lean, and your fats should be sparing but high in the omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Avoid greasy foods, alcohol, and candy.
Lift weights or perform power yoga. These are resistance exercises which will increase your lean mass and burn extra calories 24 hours per day. Also, some cardio helps.
Use a measuring tape instead of a scale to measure your progress because the measuring tape is more accurate
Here is a healthy foods list, a sample meal plan, and a workout program:

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried - no junk food.

The best diet: make your meals with no fat, eat 3 portions of fruit, and 3 portions of vegetables daily, reduce the bread and rice to 2 portions daily, and reduce the size of your portions. Then, make at least 45 minutes exercise daily and that's it. You could lose about 5 pounds a week.

sugars are the best thing to cut out...at minimum 60 minutes of cardio a day...um 50% of your diet should be carbs, 20% fat, and 30% protein...eat your fruit and veggies...you can get a more personalized food pyramid at mypyramid.gov...don't drink soda eat more of your lean meats....white meat especially chicken, turkey, and some fishes, don't drink soda...concentrate on 100% fruit juices and water...remember when working out and lifting weight ur gaining muscle which weighes mor than fat

think about your life. how much are you eating? what kind of work out do you do? well if you eat 3 plates each meals. cut it down to 1 plate. and something health. if you take the short cuts when walking some where dont. just think about it. whats health for you and whats not. its easy. its just about commitment. if you say you can do it than you can do it. beleive in yourself. eating health is a no brainer and doing exersizes its simple. all you have to do is commit to it.

besides diet and exercise, 2 most important factors to consider in losing weight are motivation and self-discipline.
most people will only lose weight if they're motivated and tend to continue on with their chosen program with a lot of self discipline. without these, i don't think you'll get any success losing weight.
