In my opinion languages advance withing the years, so... American English is an advanced language from British English...... What you asked is like saying why Europeans can´t speak proper Latín or Greek,??.... Our languages came from them but nowadays we don´t use any. Even South America Spanish is very different from the Spanish language spoken in Spain.

english is my third and what I know about english is that it has a lot of aquired words and phrases from other nations and so many exceptions to the phrases. ex
on the table sat a dish of pizza.
There is a dish of pizza on the table.
A dish of Pizza is sitting on the table.
as a 2nd comment.
I believe not too many people are learning enough english because the schools are pushing Spanish. I have never seen a country that speaks other people's languages rather than their own.

Because the English you have been taught is probably British English, which has its own idiosyncracies that are different to American English.
Possibly also because most people who teach a language teach it with the grammar of the written language, which is MUCH more conservative than spoken language and therefore often lags behind actual spoken language as it's spoken by the majority of people.

It's our version of English. Just like Romance languages developed from Latin, our American English developed from British.
If that's what you meant.
If you mean grammatically and orthographically, well, everyone makes mistakes in their native languages. It's just the way it is.

English is a complex language; it's a mishmash of Germanic, Romance, and other languages. There are few uniform rules; most of it is memorization. This makes it difficult for anyone, even those who learned it from birth.
Also, as pointed out above, there are different dialects/accents for different regions of the US. Some would argue that the phrase "You ain't seen nothing yet" is perfectly acceptable English in the Southern US.
However, I think some of the likely culprits are television and internet/instant messaging programs. We've traded in our books for televisions, iPods, and AOL-- it's no surprise our language skills are suffering.

First of all, you could use some lessons yourself. Second of all, Rev is right. I'm fortunate enough to be in that 30% that is smart (that was on purpose), but the rest of Americans really don't pay attention in school when all this is going on. I have no idea how to cure the stupidity running rampant among our youth...

You mean "Why can't Americans speak proper English?" This is because we value our THINGS rather than WHO WE ARE and what we know. Making money is a virtue, NOT education. This have never been more apparent to me since I moved to southern California (from western New York state) where people here in "SoCal" are dumber than a box of rocks, make tons of money, and are stupid enough to buy a three bedroom house for $400k, yet voted down a property tax hike of $50 more a year to support their failing public schools.
