Indulge it.
You can't really suppress a thought or emotion. You need to let yourself feel it and give it the consideration you need to deal with it and accept it. That is, truly, the only way to let go of it. If you keep fighting it then it will only keep pushing back harder.
If you are in a situation where you cannot have your thoughts interrupted then you need to try to keep your thoughts focused on the task at hand. When the unwanted thoughts come to mind you acknowledge them, just realize they are there, then return your focus to the task at hand. Don't punish yourself for the distraction, just refocus on what you need to be doing.
When you are done with that task allow your self to focus on and fully experience the thoughts and emotions you were being interrupted by. Don't fear them, just experience them. Just let them have their time.
It can take practice but if you do let yourself learn to acknowledge the thoughts and emotions you experience without letting them control you (even if that control is only fighting to keep them away you are still focusing on doing that rather than anything else) then they will become so very much more easy to deal with.
Think of it as putting it in the back of your mind to deal with later, when you are able to give it the attention it deserves, rather than suppressing it. This is acknowledging the thought but letting it go. It's like a child who needs attention. Now isn't the best time so you explain that to the child. You will, however, give the child the attention it needs later. You're thoughts are every bit as important as that child.

Yeah, just focus on a certain task, on a certain spot with your mind and your energy. Like for example, one of the greatest golfers had trouble with playing in front of a crowd or a large stage (the PGA Tour, Ben Hogan). He pretended he was in his own little world, and nothing outside of his focus would distract him. He had the ability to narrow his focus entirely on his goal, and completely squash out everything else that didn't matter in the present mometn.
It's like a zen kind of thing. Using distraction, meditation, or complete focus and attention, as well as preparation, practice, which makes things seem more familiar, easier, and you can concentrate better.

Consider using a short tune (row, row, row your boat...)
A verse (The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want......)
Close you eyes for two or three seconds while voicing the word "STOP!" Then purpose to look or taste or feel or hear something different to change your thoughts.
Wash your hands or face in cold water.
