I have heard of a some protective clothing that protects a soldiers sides but often times they look to bulky to be worn without anyone knowing.

It would be a waste of time. You will be issued body armor that is superior.

And I guarantee that after you wear it (this 'second chance shirt) for a day you will regard it as nothing more than useless extra weight.

So it has a band that stretches all the way around the chest?

Most fatal wounds don't come in on a flat line into the chest from the front. They come in from an angle, and in through the flank, or rear.

As for whether you'd be allowed to wear it...ask a recruiter.

If it wasn't visible under your other gear there shouldn't be a problem. It depends on your supervisors though. They can be d!cks about it and not allow you to wear it because it isn't an issued piece of equipment. But if nobody knows you have it on why would there be a problem?
